Signal/One
CX11A
S/N 13541860
I acquired this radio and the matching CX11S speaker from Monte Smith, W5MO, on April 7, 2017.
When I picked it up Monte also gave me some other very interesting info that I have posted on the Signal One History Page.
I am the 4th owner of this radio. Monte provided the following information:
The original air bill that you have, dated July 7, 1981, is from Signal One in Phoenix to a Mr. Sidney Purser (WD5CPZ, SK), 1209 Perry Brooks Building, Austin, TX, for a
CX-11A, serial no. 13541860; with High Power Option; and Speaker. Cost was $4200.00 for the radio, $300 for the HPO, and $120 for the speaker. Air freight was
another $51.05.
There is a nice write-up on Sidney on EHam.net written by Paul Nix, WB5AGF. Sidney was an attorney in Austin, and died in July 1982 as a result of injuries
sustained some weeks before in an auto accident.
The radio was next owned by Gareth M. Pollard, W5CDM, of Odessa,TX. Gary was a friend of Sidney, and acquired the radio from his estate. Gary went into a nursing
home in late 2011 or early 2012, and his son brought the CX-11A into K-Comm and left it on consignment. I acquired it a day or two later.
Monte also mentioned
that Sidney passed away a few months after he got this radio. An image of the air bill is posted below. Can you believe $51.05 for air freight.
Hell, today FedEx won't even look at this much weight for that kind of money much less ship it.
And $4,200 in 1981 is equal to $11,250 today.
I am proud to add this fine radio to my collection. It is now in its new home, sitting on the desk section of my Johnson Desk Kilowatt.
